Medium-sized companies generally comprise small and medium-sized enterprises, although the boundaries in terms of number of employees or sales volumes vary from one industry and country to another. In Germany, for example, 99% of all companies subject to VAT are SMEs, in which more than 50% of the employees subject to social security contributions are employed and about 35% of all sales are generated.
